Square - Privacy Policy Review from Kalispell, Montana

I've been using, and happy with square for quite some time now. However, they've been withholding a payment of mine for 7 days. They claim they need me to provide information and documentation about my business before they transfer future payments. They want a detailed description of the services I provide and how I advertise. (I'm a building contractor). Really? How I advertise? How does not knowing how I advertise (among other things they're requesting) give them grounds to withhold funds? They may as well be asking for the color of my underwear. None of their business and my advertising has nothing to do with services they provide. In their text boxes I copied and pasted the same thing in each one "I'm going to talk to a lawyer about your company withholding payments for services I've rendered.". Hope they get with the program.

Review from Las Vegas, Nevada

This same exact thing happened to me today. Yesterday two customers sent payments for an upcoming vacation rental. Later that day, I got an email from Square stating that I needed to log-in to my account and go through a verification process. I have been using Square for almost a year now. Taking payments from countless of customers with no issues. I submitted all the documents as requested last night, last three statements of my bank account, documentation of my transaction (rental agreement), I used their invoice feature so they had that, and even information about my business. Today, I got an email stating this: We’re sorry to inform you that we are deactivating your account. Our Account Services team reviewed your account and found a pattern of transactions associated with high-risk activity. Furthermore, they then state that the funds In my Square account will be held for 90 days before being released to my bank account connected to my Square account. How does that make any sense? I provide all documents requested and they still feel that for some reason the transactions were high risk, yet they conveniently want to keep the monies for 90 days. If the monies are high risk they should have cancel the transactions and immediately send the funds back to the credit card holder. The worst part of all this is that they do not provide you a way to speak to anyone at Square for explanation or clarification. These transactions were legitimate. My customers have done business in the pass with me. I provided all that was asked and they lack the common courtesy to allow one of their merchants to resolve the issue, well at least to specifically clarify the issues and explain what remedies could be taken to fix the problem. DO NOT use Square.com or Squareup.com They lack the professionalism that their merchants have earned after a long of period of business together. They have no disregard for the disruption they cause to their merchants, nor care to put business owners in a precarious situation. Today, I called my bank and will began using their service instead, SparkPay.com. SAME exact of product as Square.com BUT with a much better advantage. SparkPay.com has live customer service agents available to answer, explain, and clarify any and all issues or questions that may arise during the course of your business relationship with them. Square.com is simply in the minor leagues compared to SparkPay.com I urge all Square customers to jump ship before you find yourself in this similar situation. No customer deserves to be shut off, deprived of their earned income, and with no explanation or way to communicate with a live person to address a serious situation that literally slams the breaks on your business and could potentially result in putting you out of business. Just know that the question isn't "IF" it'll happen to you, but more like "WHEN" will it happen to you? How will you and your business be impacted by Square deliberate freezing of your hard earned money, paid by customers who are now left waiting for the service or product they paid for? Will you be able to function and deliver as promised when your funding has been cut off?

Don't use square. I am in business for 20 years and they closed my account too for NO valid reason

I am suing them

Don't think Spark Pay is better, I just switched from go payment because go payment raised rates. First batch went through fine but then they have held money and say it will take 6 months to get it back.

Beware, they are scammers.

I switched back to go payment where I have never had a problem. Steer clear of spark pay at all costs, they will rip you off.

Square - Class Action Review from Doylestown, Pennsylvania

I would really like to know if this person is real? I've been posting things since September 2013 and no one from this site has contacted me, very odd. Square has ruined my business, family and future. Have attorneys on Columbus looking at the CLASS ACTION and are preparing to file and no one wants in? If you have been ripped off like others call me or a last leave you number and contact info. This site seems to be about useless :-( Try searching: Complaints against Square and get to the cardpaymentsoptions site. Lots of people have joined from there but not here. Never ending battle with Square. I've been at it for over a year now and the local/state government offices of the Attorney General, BBB refuse to do anything.

I even have a file with the FTC. I'll not stop until they are closed.

Square is not for legitimate businesses

I was signed up for Square for about six weeks for a new business. We ran our first 5 transactions through Square, they were round dollar amounts and very similar because we are a service company and work on retainer. After four days, one charge was finally deposited in our bank account. Square then held our funds and sent an email to ask for information for more 'verification' to make sure we were a real business. I provided bank statements, business license and customer invoice as they asked. I also gave explanations that we were a new company etc. and that the business license was required by the state. The next day we got an email saying our account was deactivated and we would have to wait NINETY days to get our funds, or refund the customer. There was no option to appeal or to speak to customer service. The explanation was simply that Square had the right to terminate at any time for any reason. We had to have an awkward conversation with the client, refund, and now wait more than a week to get our funds. We are required to comply with multiple state laws and compliance requirements, our company can get sensitive information and has to provide proof of legitimacy frequently but Square (used by street vendors and Boy scout groups) cancels our account???? What a joke, and the fees are astronomical. I would not recommend to anyone.

Square does what they want to when they want to.

Square has got to be the biggest joke in the industry. We signed up for square when they first hit the market and had no problems up until last month. I had received an email from them about updating my reader and since my business only processes cards a few times a year in the fall, I didn’t to it immediately. Two weeks ago, I signed into my account, and the account was noted that it was permanently deactivated. I searched my emails to see if I had received anything from them and I had not, other than the notices to upgrade my reader. Since they have ZERO phone support, I was left with sending them an email as to why my account was deactivated. I received a reply from that I was running an illegal business and according to their terms, there service was not to be used for gambling or betting and that their decision was final and the deactivation of the account could not be reversed. I was floored, I responded back to them that I didn’t run an illegal business, that my business did not involve gambling or betting. That I had been in business for 12 years and had used their company for 4 years and asked them how they came to their conclusion, and since I was being accused, by them, of running an illegal business that I should be able to know how they came to this conclusion and why had I never received notice that my account had been deactivated. They responded back to me that by the terms with M/C & Visa, they didn’t have to disclose anything period. I’m one of the lucky ones, as I didn’t have any funds pending, for if I had, they could hold my funds for 90 days. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and apparently square is not communicating with them either. I will admit that when I was using square, I was very happy with it, but just to leave me high and dry with no notice, or explanation is totally unacceptable.

Review from Glenpool, Oklahoma

I own a moving company and we were suppose to be transporting a vehicle out of state with another load we had for a customer. We loaded our truck and then sat waiting for the person with the vehicle to call us with the information. The party that had the vehicle was supposed to be available that morning for us to pick up the truck. After wasting 4 hours we had to continue out of state. Our policy clearly states no refund on day of scheduled services. He disputed for the 750.00 charge! No worries I sent in our policy and they told me it would take UP TO 75 days. Umm ok well 6 MONTHS later still no answer. Believe what others are saying! They are a SCAM and will hold your money for themselves!!!!!!! I will be pursuing legal actions against square.

Deactivated my account keot $2,000

I have been using Square for over 2 years now. All the sudden out of the blue, they want more info from me. Drivers license and receipts. So I willingly sent them in. I called them 30 mins later as instructed and they told me everything was "good to go" and my account was fine. I get an email about 15 mins later stating that they are holding all funds for 90 days! I might end up going out of business now because of them! If you try and call them GOODLUCK! Unless you have "permission" from them in the form of a code, you will not beable to talk to anyone!! Now i'm left high and dry with done deals and no funding!!

Unfortunately, your problem really isn't Square, at least in this instance: the problem is the system. The same thing happens daily to merchants who take credit cards in person, over the phone, or over the internet.

It even happens with PayPal. They call it "friendly fraud" but it's hard to find anything "friendly" about it.

The chargeback system was created decades ago as a fail-safe, a way to get people to feel more comfortable with using credit cards. Merchant technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, but the chargeback system has not kept pace--and that makes it very susceptible to abuse.

Should communicating with the bank take 90 days? In the era of instant messaging, no, it should not.

But 90 days IS the average time. In their defense, it's not quite as simple as "talking to the bank": there are normally at least 2 banks involved, plus processors, plus other parties. Still, it should be able to be resolved in a week, but that is extremely rare.

Automatically taking the customer's word for the situation, without checking with the merchant? That's normal, too.

Banks know that most merchants can't afford to NOT take credit cards, so they're not that worried about losing YOU as a customer. Instead, they take the path of least resistance, which is to just assume the consumer is right and go ahead and lock up your funds (and in most cases, hit YOU with numerous fines).

No one explains this stuff to you going in; I had to learn the hard way. There are companies out there that say they can prevent chargebacks, but most of them are only negotiating with the banks to give you a heads-up if a chargeback is filed. Kinda like "Hey this is going to happen and there's nothing you can do about it but if you go ahead and give the consumer a refund (whether warranted or not), at least you won't get a chargeback fee ..."

As Daffy Duck once said, "Thanks for the sour persimmons, sister ..." I am not saying Square is a great (or a bad) company, just saying that what you experienced isn't that unusual.

It ain't RIGHT, it just IS.

There ARE people and companies who are fighting for CHANGE in the system (one company in particular seems to be making headway, but I'm not here to promote anyone...) . That's not much immediate help to you, I know, but still good to know that SOMEone is trying.

I had been using Square for almost two months. Without any warning I received the following email: Hello ###, Based on a recent review of your account, we have determined that: - High risk activity was detected. As a result, Square is deactivating your account. Starting on the date of this e-mail, you will not be able to process transactions using Square. Visit the Square website for more information on the Square Seller Agreement: https://squareup.com/legal/ua Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely, They did send this email without informing me about any suspicious activity, and on top of that they are holding CAD 500 on my account. I have been trying to contact them and it has not been possible. Personal advice, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY EVER!!

I am in the same situation and currently facing fraud charges from my clients. No one including the Attorney General of Ohio, the BBB or the FTC even believe me when I tell them what is happening.

They simply tell me to hire an attorney. I have been trying to get enough people for a class action law suite against them but have only had a few people email me.

Please PLEASE contact me, I am fighting for my life here. kpack@***.com
